Ten Things You Should Know
About Karlie Lucas
I like to listen to a variety of songs. I have a specific playlist for different types of scenes, like modern pop for action scenes, sound tracks for intense or sad scenes. It also depends on what story I’m working on at the time.
2. What is the first thing you remember writing?
The first time I remember writing was probably in first grade. I wrote a little story about a doll I had named Kimi. I think I still have that somewhere.
3. Do you have any other creative outlets besides writing?
I like to draw, paint, sew, cook, bake, sculpt, sing, dance (when no one’s looking), and occasionally do embroidery. I make most of my own promotional items, including pendants, wall scrolls, posters, coasters, and replicas.
4. At what moment did you feel like you could say, “NOW, I'm an author?”
I think I could first say “I’m an author” was after I first held the proof copy of my first book in my hands. It was a pretty awesome experience, even if it wasn’t officially in print yet.
5. Do you have any furry writing buddies? (Or scaled or feathered?)
I actually have a cat named Kally, though I’d not really call her a writing buddy, more like a distraction. She likes to have attention and will demand it quite vocally if she doesn’t get it when she wants it, regardless of what I’m doing.
6. What project are you working on now?
I am currently working on the second and third parts of my dragon trilogy, Tarragon. The second part comes out in April, and part three will come out sometime next year. I’m also working on a story that will probably not come out for several years, as it has a lot of work and editing it needs, mostly because it’s set in our world and isn’t a fantasy.
8. What fictional character would you like to have as a best friend (could be your own)?
Now that’s a hard one. All of my characters are essentially my friends, though if I had to pick one, I’d probably say Tyler from my dragon series. He’s pretty awesome, especially since he’s a dragon.
9. Who are your 3 favorite characters in your book(s)?
That’s like asking a parent with a million kids to pick a favorite. Okay, I guess I really like Anwen and Tyler from my Tarragon trilogy. They’re sort of opposites, but they’re both also down to earth. I also really like Marie, from The Unknown Elf. I used to pretend to be here when I went to high school, which was cool. I had a very understanding choir teacher.
10. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself or your writing?
Well, I guess you could say that writing is my passion. If I’m not working on an original story, I’m writing fan fiction. I think writing fan fiction is actually a great outlet for when original characters aren’t talking to you. That and it’s a great way to learn how to get into different characters’ heads.
