“Into the trees!” Gwen yelled at Hazel. They were no use against a flesh-and-blood dragon, much less this monstrosity. The most they could hope for was to evade it while the Dragon Guard did what they were trained to do.
She made it into the forest with Hazel following close behind, both their horses eager to escape the battle. Guards shouted, and the dragon's movements grated against the air like a small rock slide. Metal clanked against stone. Judging from the state of Will's sword, that method of attack wouldn't get them far. Still, they outnumbered the dragon. She tried to ignore Will's warning that they couldn't handle it.
